The date is 1962 the day Nelson Mandela was sentenced to prison for overthrowing the South African Government.
This is how it all started… Nelson Mandela was born July 18, 1918 but no one knew what a big help he would be to South Africa. Nelson Mandela grew up to love politics and soon he wanted to help Africa by stopping racism.
Nelson did things like go door to door of houses to spread the word, but he still felt that it wasn’t enough. Nelson wrote letters to the governor…but the governor ignored them like many other people did. Finally a letter was sent back from the governor and Nelson was so excited until he opened the letter.
Nelson was rejected of his request and he wasn’t happy about it.
Then Nelson had an idea to try to convince the governor of his beliefs; instead of looking forward to convincing the governor and arriving home to a good meal he was sentenced to prison.
Nelson had a feeling he would be in prison for a while and he was right. Nelson was in prison for 28 years. Over the years in prison things have changed; people now respect Nelson Mandela and racism is a thing of the past. Nelson remained in prison a long time but he did not give up his dream!
Nelson finally got out of prison in the 1990’s. He was not surprised by the changes made in South Africa. Nelson is still alive today and in all his glory he will know he helped stop racism just like Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Fredrick Douglass and so many more. Even if racism is still happening Nelson knows there’s less of it in the world.
