Civil Rights Hero
By Jackson

Would you be willing to give your life; so others would have freedom? From the 1950’s to the 1960’s Martin Luther King was trying to stop the Jim Crow Laws. He gave speeches and he led marches; he even died just to stop Jim Crow Laws. His success made it possible for all different kinds of people to come together. Martin hated the Jim Crow Laws. His dad (Martin Luther King Sr.) also hated the laws. Many whites hated Martin for trying to stop Jim Crow Laws. The police sent Martin to jail many times just for trying to get freedom.

When Martin was in college he met Coretta Scott. They fell in love. Martin asked her to marry him. It was a hard decision. She would have to give up her singing career. She finally said yes. She was willing to give up her singing career to help Martin stop Jim Crow Laws.

A woman named Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man on a bus. The driver called the police, she was arrested afterward. Martin didn’t think this was fair. He led a boycott where no Blacks rode buses until the law was changed. The boycott lasted a full year. The bus company finally decided to change the law. Martin had won, the law was changed but, he was going to change more laws.

In August 1963 Martin gave his “I Have a Dream” speech in Washington D.C. The speech was about how he thought the world should be. Later in the next year Martin was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Just before Martin was going to give another speech in Washington D.C. he was assassinated at a motel. He had changed many Jim Crow Laws. He was a Civil Rights hero and his dream lived on until there was no more Jim Crow Laws. Because of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. America is a better place for people of all races to live and enjoy freedom.
