Benjamin was about nine when he became his brother’s apprentice printer. Months and months went by. Ben got good as a printer. Soon he made a news paper and signed it as “Silent Do-Good”. He told his brother and he was furious. But soon Ben would escape.
He made a friend while he was handing out newspapers. His brother got him a family that would take care of him. He would pay them to feed Ben. Benjamin made a deal with his brother. The deal was to give Ben the money instead of the family. Any change he got he could keep. James agreed with the deal. With all the change Ben got he bought a lot of books. One day he found a cookbook and stopped eating meat.
Ben was tired of being his brother’s assistant. So an old friend gave him a boat and Ben sailed off. For three years he sailed. Finally he reached Virginia. He had three ha’pennies and bought three penny loafs. The lady who sold it to him was Elizabeth. She liked who he was.
But, Ben had gone to England. He discovered a new way to exercise. Three months went by and he came back. He and Elizabeth wanted to get married, but she already had a husband who went to war. Ben had already had a child in England. So they weren’t legally married.
They had two children but one drowned at the age of two. So then the wars had come and passed. Elizabeth died while Ben was in England. So he kept trying to stop England from taking America back and helped write the Declaration of Independence.
